TRENT VALLEY NOON COLUMN WALK

Trent Valley Noon Column

Our last walk begins at Croxall Nature Reserve and also the National Arboretum!  (See below if you are confused!)

When: Thursday, 6th July, 2017

Meet: In the Car Park at 10 am

Parking: In the car park (SK188.138) at Croxall Nature Reserve which is on the A513 a little further on from the turn to the National Arboretum. You will need to drive through Burton upon Trent, down the A38, following directions for the National Arboretum (Croxall Road, Alrewas, Staffs DE13 7AR). From A38 turn left onto the A513 but go straight over the roundabout instead of turning left to the Arboretum, after a short distance go over a hump backed bridge and turn left into the second drive-way which is the Nature Reserve.

Directions to Noon Column: Walk out of the car park and turn left through a kissing gate into the Nature Reserve. Follow the broad path for about 10 minutes when you will see the Noon Column on your left.

Walk: The location of this Noon Column does not lend itself to planning a 5 mile circular walk from it!!! It is close to 2 railway lines, has no footpaths running past it, is in an area where there are rivers and lakes and also on a main road. So ……………….. We will walk to the Noon Column and then take a gentle stroll around the Nature Reserve. Instead of risking life and limb walking along the A513 we will move our cars onto the National Arboretum Car Park (charge £3 – but all goes to the upkeep of the Arboretum). We can then have tea/coffee and maybe take a gentle stroll along the side of the river to an area called Watersmeet, take a short walk out towards Willowbrook Farm and then return to cars to go for lunch at the Bridge Inn on the canal.
There are 4 stiles (2 out and the same 2 back) if we go out to Willowbrook. The distance will be around 3 or 4 miles depending on where we choose to go.

Refreshments: Tea Room at the Arboretum. Bridge Inn at Branston for lunch. Due to road closures we park at Branston Water Park and walk along the side of the canal for a short distance to the pub.
